I am a big fan of toners, especially those that combine a selection of unique bioactives and deliver the results promised. Perfect match!
With that in mind, I have, thanks to the blogger LoveLula progamme, picked the Toner Plus* from Esse organic skincare, the south African organic beauty brand that uses probiotics as its signature ingredient.
If you are curious to see how it performs, read below!
Before elaborating about the toner itself, let me explain briefly what probiotics are. I promise to do a more complete post about it later on.
For now, if there is one thing to remember about probiotics it is that they are “live” organisms or “health-beneficial” bacteria and they exist under various species. For example, you may have heard of bifidobacteria and lactobacilli, which are lactic acid-producing bacteria. They are normally present in the gut and, interestingly enough, they actually may play a role in treating certain skin diseases. When taken orally, probiotics are able to rebalance the gut, reduce oxidative stress and inflammation.
What about in skincare then? As you may be aware, the skin serves as a habitat for a population of micro-organisms including bacteria and fungi called microbiota. Some are “friendly” and others are “less friendly”. In general, a healthy skin microbiotia correlates with a happy and clear complexion. More scientific research needs to be done in order to evaluate the skin benefits of probiotic-rich topical products. It is also not completely clear which strains of bacteria or derivatives are the most result-driven. However, there have been a few interesting studies showing the anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial effects of probiotic derivatives and in particularly in their role in strengthening the barrier fonction. Promising isn’t?
Back to the review now.
As you may know, toner remains a key staple in my routine (here you can read the benefits of having a toner in your beauty routine).
The Toner Plus from Esse comes in a very stylish spray that delivers a really fine mist. The scent is ok, perhaps more herbal than floral. Using healing Aloe vera as a base, the Toner Plus bursts of really interesting nutrients for the skin:
Jacon tuber root juice- higly moisturising with energizing properties.
Baobab fruit extract- anti-oxidant.
Inulin- ingredient derived from Chicory root, acts as skin humectant and conditionning.
Alpha-glucan oligosaccharides- moisturising.
Lactobactilus casei and acidophillus- Lysates of these bacteria strains restore the skin natural’s balance.
Lactic acid- alpha-hydroxy acid that exfoliates, hydrates and brightens.
Salicylic acid- beta-hydroxy acid that heals and acts as an antiseptic. Great if used at low concentration.
The combinaison of these components (inulin/water/alpha-glucan oligosaccharides) also acts as prebiotic for the skin helping to restore its natural balance by stimulating the growth of the “good bacteria”. Baobab fruit extract also has prebiotic properties.
That sounds really awesome isn’t it?
What about the results then? I have been using this mist regularly in the evening for a few weeks now. At the beginning, I did not see any big differences in terms of skin texture/glow. But now, I have to say that I’m completely happy about it and this really proves to me that you should never expect “immediate results” (in general, I do not anyway). The toner has been able to unify my skin, erase the little imperfections, and just give this layer of moisture to my skin so needed at the moment. My skin overall appearance is definitely more uniform and irritation are minimized.
Retailing at £29.55 for 100ml, it is not cheap. However, the Toner Plus is rich in skin-loving ingredients, is not diluted with water and is really an added bonus to your skincare routine.
It is a big YES for me, and completely worth the money.
I would totally recommend it if your skin is sensitive, oily, environnementally stressed or suffering from breakouts.
…a top Toner that will transform your skin!
