There’s no denying it: green beauty is here to stay. But have you ever wondered what makes beauty “green” in the first place? Are green beauty companies required to follow a set of standards? And how do we know if we’re buying truly “green” beauty? Today we get the inside scoop from the guru of green beauty herself, One Love Organics founder Suzanne LeRoux.
OLO: Let’s start with the basics: what is the purpose of green beauty?
Suzanne: Contrary to what many may think, I sought out and ultimately created a green beauty company out of my own vanity and skin health! I just wanted smooth, radiant skin and I wasn’t obtaining it even though I had been a lifelong beauty junkie. On top of that, my favorite pastime – beauty shopping! – wasn’t fun anymore once I began learning about some of the ingredients I was putting on my skin. Once I made the switch to natural and organic skincare products, I finally achieved glowing skin. Not only have I not worn foundation for 15 years, beauty shopping is more fun now than ever! While environmental sustainability and kindness to animals is undoubtedly the right thing to do, the purpose of green beauty for me is to feel great in my skin and have a blast shopping for beauty products that I can trust.
OLO: What’s the first thing consumers should know about the term “green beauty?”
Suzanne: Unfortunately, the FDA does not define or regulate the term green beauty, so anyone can decide what it means to them and label their products as such. As attorneys and co-owners of One Love Organics, my husband and I believe that defining the term is crucial to insure brands are complying with an objective set of standards that consumers can trust. Without standards, the term “green beauty” essentially has no meaning.
OLO: Without a government regulating body, how did you determine OLO’s green beauty standards?
Suzanne: From our experience, OLO customers derive so much more joy from the products when they trust what they’re putting on their skin. Because that trust means everything to us, we decided not to set our own standards, but to work with ECOCERT®, a rigorous global third-party certification body with a demanding set of regulations. It’s an extraordinary amount of work and we are audited multiple times a year, but it is SO worth it to insure our customers are getting the absolute best in green beauty. We do it because this is the certification we would trust if we were the consumer.
OLO: Can you tell us about some of the standards ECOCERT® requires?
Suzanne: ECOCERT® monitors every step from the time the ingredients are in the ground to the time the final product ships to the consumer. All ingredients must be derived from renewable resources, and at least 95% of any plant-based ingredients must come from organic farming. Not only does ECOCERT® regulate ingredients, but we must also comply with their sustainability and environmental standards on every aspect of manufacturing – from our equipment, to our packaging, to our recycling program, to the cleaning products we use in our facility. Attention to detail is an understatement! Notably, One Love Organics owns the only ECOCERT® licensed manufacturing facility for natural and organic cosmetics in the state of Georgia and is one of only a handful of such facilities licensed in the United States.
OLO: In what ways has holding yourselves to such high standards paid off?
Suzanne: We truly believe that having exacting standards is what sets us apart in the green beauty industry. Attention to detail, quality, and efficacy have garnered One Love Organics products a devout fan base, multiple industry awards, press attention from around the globe, and distribution in fine retailers, holistic centers and spas throughout the United States and Canada.
OLO: What is the best way for consumers to know they’re getting truly “green” beauty?
Suzanne: Outside of being ECOCERT® certified, the best way to know if you can trust any beauty product is by reading the label! Skincare and cosmetic labels can be so beautifully distracting and filled with marketing jargon that it sometimes feels like we need an advanced degree to decipher them. I wrote a detailed blog post on decoding cosmetic ingredient labels that will help consumers feel confident and trust they’re making a great purchase.
